Avoiding the Computer

Despite my intent to post more regularly, I find that by the time I am not working I have little interest in sitting in front of the computer to write. This game would be so much better if I could post telepathically and then edit quickly before it goes live.

As summer ends next weekend, it's been a doozy of a busy summer. In part that's my fault, but it's also just a sign that things are going well with work since the weekdays have been occupied with that which is I think how that is supposed to work.

On the upside a lot of the time I have been not home was spent at our Cub Scout Resident Camp and was a lot of fun for the most part. Yes, it is possible to have fun at a camp full of Cub Scouts and parents especially if you only have to deal with them on a limited basis. As you may recall I was certified to run resident camps back in March and had intended to visit all of our camps to be an understudy for the other directors. It ended up more that I just hung out with the director at the Cub Camp and filled in for him a few times over night. I had a blast.

It has been a long time since I got to just be at camp and with the quality of the staff at camp that was pretty much all I had to do--hang out. I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of camp staffs and this was the best that I can recall. When I was playing the part of director I really didn't have to do much except field the occasional issue that the staff already were on top of. The rest of the time I spent wandering about watching and participating or just chilling in the office. The part that made me feel the best about being there was being adopted as a staff member by the staff. It gave me the warm fuzzies to be taken in by them as a friend and mentor. The funny part was that I didn't even try to do that, it just happened in part, I think, because I cared enough to spend time with them.

Two notable moments with the staff were both off-site and out of uniform. The first was celebrating one of the guys birthdays at the local tavern until midnight and then realizing that I had a 7am meeting. I felt that the next day. The second was playing 5 rounds of laser tag with them at their closing party. Lots of fun and I even got the high score on the last round.

After the time I spent with them I really think that I would like to be the director there next summer. Will that happen? I don't know, but it's worth looking into.

In other highlights:
  • Brian's football season started and the games have been fun again, but really warm to sit out at.
  • Last weekend I attended my umpteenth Order of the Arrow induction weekend and spent the day Saturday clear-cutting small pine trees in the rain and getting soaked in the process. As I was working with the group I was with, the motto "If it ain't raining, we ain't camping" the universal Boy Scout Troop motto. Had a good time doing it though so I can't really complain. While I was there I met one of our new staff whose background is strikingly similar to my own. We bonded while burning stuff. Excellent.
  • Bought a car GPS unit--a Garmin Nuvi 350--with a gift card I received. It's name is Megan in honor of Megan Fox from Transformers. I couldn't really help naming it as it talks to you and it helps for things I talk back to to be named.
  • Our Scout Exec got promoted to another council and is gone effective Sunday. This makes me sad as he's been an awesome guy to work for, but it's comforting to know that his two deputies are staying and can be a cushion if we end up with an unpleasant chief. We'll know who our new boss is in mid-September and we're all waiting anxiously to find out.
Time to go relax some before I go to bed and then camp tomorrow for the weekend. Whoopee!
